Are your ADHD symptoms in adults getting out of hand? Are you saying and doing things impulsively that jeopardize your relationships or career? Are you losing important items or forgetting details imperative to your job? Is your anger getting the best of you?

These are common ADHD symptoms in adults, and if your condition is not managed, the behaviors could cause conflicts in your relationships, miscommunication, and issues at work.

You are a hard worker. You are an intelligent adult who happens to struggle with ADHD. But there are effective treatments available.

Common treatments for ADHD symptoms in adults

No one experiences ADHD quite the same way. Your adult ADHD symptoms are probably different than those experienced by a friend. If you had ADHD as a child, your symptoms may be milder, or you may have learned to control some of the thoughts and behaviors but not all.

When you approach a counselor about treatment, your treatment plan will look different than someone else’s plan. This is because the counselor customizes the plan to your condition and needs. As a result, what worked for one person may not be the best solution for another.

Talk therapy.

Talk therapy is still a chosen method for treating various mental health conditions. You build a bond with your counselor that enables them to help you realize why you do what you do. They can help you overcome obstacles brought about by your symptoms or an impulsive act.

With today’s technology, you can meet with your counselor in person in the office or virtually from the comfort of your home. Some people choose a hybrid option, where they may meet with their counselor in the office monthly and do check-ins virtually or by phone weekly.

Couples and family therapy

If your ADHD symptoms have affected your relationship with your significant other or family, you may opt for couples, marriage, or family therapy to address the issues. Bringing your spouse or family into a session allows the counselor to hear both sides and share techniques to resolve conflict and communicate better.

Your counselor can educate your family on how to help you stay on track or address specific concerns at home. For example, if your wife storms off because she believes you are not listening to her, the counselor can give her tips on what to say to help pull your focus back to her during a conversation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a helpful method used to change negative thoughts and emotions into positive ones that will ultimately change the behavior. If you struggle with your thoughts and heightened emotions, your counselor will teach you how to change the perspective and feelings associated with those thoughts.

CBT is a short-term treatment that is goal-focused. The skills you learn during treatment can be parlayed into other areas of your life. For example, you can use CBT techniques at home and work. Your counselor will assign homework for you outside of your sessions, and you will report back during your next session or check-in.
