You must learn new skills to reach your goals, move forward in your relationships, increase your income, and boost your likelihood of a promotion or better-paying career. Review your strengths and weaknesses as you write your personal development plan and decide what skills you need to attain.

Skills to consider for your personal development plan.

You are better at some skills than others, but you can learn new skills that could change your life. Someone might overcome low self-esteem by taking a few public speaking courses. Another person might learn conflict resolution and gain a promotion after word gets around that they are a peacemaker.

Never stop learning. Staying teachable is a lifelong desire that can open doors for you. It helps you to remain relevant, gain confidence, and develop resiliency.

Public speaking.

Public speaking can help you overcome social phobias, anxiety, and shyness. It can grow your confidence and leadership skills. You can inspire others with your words.

For people with social anxiety, public speaking is challenging. Their anxiety can get so uncontrollable that it triggers a panic attack. Public speaking will still help, but these individuals need to learn the skill at their own pace. A counselor can assist them in taking small steps in mastering public speaking.

Time management.

Time is a commodity we can never get back. We all have the same 24 hours each day, but how we manage this time sets successful people apart from others. When you manage your time, you can prioritize the necessary work and focus primarily on completing those tasks.

As you learn time management, add time blocks for rest. In the era of hustle, we often leave out rest, but God created an entire day for us to rest in Him because He knows that stress builds and will eventually burn us out physically and psychologically.

Communication.

Learning communication skills should be on your personal development plan if you feel uncomfortable speaking to others or communicating your wants and desires. There are several communication skills that you can learn from active listening to addressing the other person’s personality to form a bond with them.

One quick way to form a bond with another person is to ask questions about them. People love to talk about themselves; by asking them questions, you can make them feel important. Ask about their family, job, schooling, hobbies, and future dreams.

Conflict resolution.

Conflict resolution is a skill you can use at work, school, home, and in your relationships. The ability to defuse a bad situation, make peace, or come to an agreement is a learned skill. This is a valuable skill in the workplace and can bump you into a leadership position.

Add conflict resolution courses to your personal development plan. You might also want to add goal setting and leadership skills to your plan, as these skills are linked to promotions, raises, and bonuses. Employees who bring more value to the company make more money overall and typically gain larger responsibilities.
